| HUNGARIAN (MAGYAR) Hungarian is an Ugric language in Hungary (Magyarország) and Serbia. Home speakers live in Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Serbia, Ukraine, and Austria. There are also many people of Hungarian origin in the UK and other European countries, the USA, Canada and Australia.
HistoryThe first recorded Hungarian words are personal and place names quoted in foreign sources, including Arabic, Greek and Byzantine, from the 10th century. The first substantial piece of Hungarian text is the Halotti Beszéd (Funeral Oration) of 1200. Hungarian literature flourished during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The old Hungarian period is a period with literary remains in the history of the language, though there was no real Hungarian literacy at that time - however the Hungarians' ancestors may have recorded shorter or longer texts with the help of runic writing. Hungarian literary remains are sporadically preserved in Greek or Latin texts, and original texts have survived from the end of the 12th century.
